Obviously, this is not my poem. I heard it for the first time when I was a child. It is one of my Mother’s favorites, and mine as well. I even had the poem on a plaque mounted in my childhood room. It is a wonderful reminder.
I share this poem with you because we are all in this together. Even when you think you are alone, you are part of something bigger.
Helen Keller – “The best and most beautiful things in this world cannot be seen or even heard, but must be felt with the heart.”
One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints: one belonged to him and the other set to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life, there were only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it was at the time of his lowest and saddest.
This really troubled him. So he asked the Lord about it.
“Lord, you said once I decided to follow you, you would walk with me all the way?
But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there are only one set of footprints.
I do not understand why, when I needed you the most, you would leave me?”
The Lord replied, “my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During the times of your trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, that is when I carried you.”
